THE NOTION OF PRIVATE PROPERTY WITHIN A PUBLIC SPACE

In Italian, the word abito is translated as dress.

Abito derived from Latin habitus, to dress, to clothe, to array and to dwell, to inhabit.

Descended is the word habitat, the state of dwelling.

My artifact is the personal “bubble” which enables the reader of the thesis to inhabit my abito, my private space, while isolate oneself from the outer space.

The aim of this thesis is to investigate and identify the notion of private space in display for the public through three art installations made by Do Ho Suh, Ai Wei Wei and Studioisle. The three artworks display the owner’s private notion of personal space by replicating their place of inhabitation. It will also unfold how the audience can inhabit someone’s private space through the understating of home and transform the audience into an active participant.
